Welcome to Dalby Farm in Scituate, Massachusetts! Today, we’re diving more into the essentials of caring for pigs, featuring footage of  our incredibly sweet 4 month old Ossabaw Island piglets- Pickles & Pablo!

Feeding and Diet
Pigs are omnivores and thrive on a balanced diet of high-quality pig feed, fresh vegetables, fruits, and some grains. Adult pigs typically eat about 2-4% of their body weight each day, depending on their age, size, and activity level. Remember, avoid processed foods, chocolate, caffeine, and anything high in salt or sugar, as some plants, like nightshade, can be toxic.

Housing and Space Requirements
Pigs need a safe, dry shelter, like a barn or shed, that protects them from the elements. Ideally, they should have at least 100 square feet of outdoor space, complete with mud or water for wallowing—a natural behavior they love!

Behavior and Training
Pigs are social animals and can get along well with other pets and children if properly socialized. Supervision is key, especially with small ones. Yes, pigs can be trained just like dogs! They’re smart and can learn commands, tricks, and even litter box training using positive reinforcement.

Boredom can lead to destructive behavior, so it’s important to provide plenty of toys, activities, and social interaction to keep them engaged.

Lifespan and Aging
Domestic pigs can live 12-20 years with the right care. As they age, they may slow down and will require dietary adjustments and more frequent vet check-ups.

Financial Considerations
Owning pigs comes with ongoing costs for food, vet bills, bedding, housing, and enrichment materials. It’s wise to budget for unexpected health issues, as well as potential hidden costs like emergency care and increased utility bills.
